Growth – Penisula Zoning

As your Councilman, I will propose a plan to create special zoning for peninsulas. The special zoning would take into account the fact that there is one way in and one way out of the peninsulas. It is also important to realize environmental impacts are more severe on these areas.

Environment - Oyster Program and Watershed Organization

I will propose an initiative to help save the bay. Through the program, waterfront property owners would receive property tax credits for raising oyster spat at private piers. Once the oysters reach maturity, they would be planted in local waters in sanctuary reefs. Oysters act as a filter for the bay, but the current population is only 1 or 2 percent of historic levels. It once took roughly 4 days to filter the entire volume of the bay, now it takes over 400 days. I will spearhead an effort to create an organization specific to the watersheds in the Pasadena and Marley areas. This organization would coordinate volunteers and activities that benefit local tributaries including applying for grants through state and federal environmental programs.

Growth and the environment go hand and hand. Where we build, what we build and how we build determines the health of the land, air and bay. Parts of the county can support growth in a way that is friendly to the environment and infrastructure, while other areas cannot. As a council member I will work with state and local officials to implement road designs that reduce traffic congestion.

Education

Education is one of my key issues of concern. The quality of education for our students directly effects all of us. For the student it will be a major factor in their future quality of life and their career. For the rest of us it is a factor in everything from the quality of the workforce to crime rates.

Teachers have a tremendous responsibility on their hands, not only the future of the students but also our nation's future. Have we given them the tools to be successful? I am worried that increases in funding levels over the last decade have not reached the classroom. I feel we need a strong County Council to help initiate reforms and increase accountability.

I will fight to ensure more funds reach the schools and classrooms. I support smaller class sizes and higher salaries for teachers. As a husband of a school teacher, I understand the challenges teachers face on a daily basis.

Fiscal Responsibility

As a Certified Public Accountant and businessman, I will work hard to ensure your tax dollars are spent wisely. I will be fiscally responsible and will always remember that the funds of the county are really those of the citizens.

Public Safety

In today's state of the world the public safety departments of Anne Arundel County are more important than ever. I will support these departments to ensure proper staffing, training and development for the everyday emergencies and those previously unforeseen.

Senior Citizens

I will fight to improve our senior center which is the most utilized center in the county as well as work to reduce property taxes for seniors so they donÕt have to sell their homes to survive. The transportation system for seniors and the disabled needs to be improved.
