Dillon Proposes Program to Aid in Bay Restoration

PASADENA, Maryland - October 9, 2002 - Ron Dillon, Jr, candidate for County Council in District 3, has proposed a program to promote participation in bay restoration efforts. Through the program, waterfront property owners would receive property tax credits for raising oyster spat at private piers. Once the oysters reach maturity, they would be planted in local waters in sanctuary reefs."This is an exciting initiative that will supplement and encourage participation in current oyster garden programs. Revival of the oyster population is paramount to saving the bay," said Mr. Dillon. Oysters act as a filter for the bay, but the current population is only 1 or 2 percent of historic levels. It once took roughly 4 days to filter the entire volume of the bay, now it takes over 400 days. Mr. Dillon also stated that he would spearhead an effort to create an organization specific to the watersheds in the Pasadena and Marley areas. This organization would coordinate volunteers and activities that benefit local tributaries. According to Mr. Dillon, "The benefit of this organization would be to add structure and organization to community environmental projects. In addition, it gives the Pasadena and Marley area an opportunity to apply for grants through state and federal environmental programs."

Murphy has failed to control growth

Fact:

  • My opponent lifted the building moratorium along Mountain Road
  • It is a matter of time until the Reversible Lanes on Mountain Road are outgrown.
  • My opponent has no plan to curb growth

Growth - Peninsula Zoning

As your Councilman, I will propose a plan to create special zoning for peninsulas. The special zoning would take into account the fact that there is one way in and one way out of the peninsulas. It is also important to realize environmental impacts are more severe on these areas.

Environment - Oyster Program and Watershed Organization

I will propose an initiative to help save the bay. Through the program, waterfront property owners would receive property tax credits for raising oyster spat at private piers. Once the oysters reach maturity, they would be planted in local waters in sanctuary reefs.

Oysters act as a filter for the bay, but the current population is only 1 or 2 percent of historic levels. It once took roughly 4 days to filter the entire volume of the bay, now it takes over 400 days.

I will spearhead an effort to create an organization specific to the watersheds in the Pasadena and Marley areas. This organization would coordinate volunteers and activities that benefit local tributaries including applying for grants through state and federal environmental programs.

Fiscal Responsibility

My opponent gave herself a 26% pay raise last fall! At the same time other county employees only received 1%-2% raises and the economy was in recession. As a Certified Public Accountant and businessman, I will work hard to ensure your tax dollars are spent wisely. I will donate my part of the raise to charity.

Education

I will fight to ensure more funds reach the schools and classrooms. I support smaller class sizes and higher salaries for teachers. As a husband of a school teacher, I understand the challenges teachers face on a daily basis.
